Eve Bunting's message is that change is a part of life and you must be able to accept change. In this story the Sioux used the moonstick as the method to mark the passage of time and the changes that occurred within each season. We can relate to the moonstick as a form of a calendar and our holidays and seasonal events help to mark our passage of time. With these changes we accept the good and the bad as a part of life.

The purpose of the story was to teach the acceptance of change as a part of life; however, it is the traditions that are kept that form the constants in life and connect generations. We see this in our own families when we keep up family traditions.

The themes of the story are growing up, accepting change, passing on traditions and the promise of renewal.
